Began exploring the top and side profiles of generic salad tongs by easing the functional line with fair curves. After selecting from a large collection of options, I created several candidate orthographic drawings. Created foam models to examine the subtle ergonomic changes needed to fit well in a hand.
The focus of this exercise was on ergonomics and visual form for this kitchen tool. Adjusting every edge to fit comfortably in the hand, while simplifying the challenging motion needed for effective use of the tool.
The selected prototype design resulted in a mirror image for each individual tong, really challenging my fabrication skills. After finalizing the top and side view of each tong, I used a bandsaw to cut out the rough form. Performed many trials and subtractive methods, to complete the tongs and shape them into my final design.
